Announcing Katy Stone’s exhibition, Force Field

(Seattle, WA) – January 12, 2022 – J. Rinehart Gallery is delighted to announce Force Field, our first exhibition of long-time Seattle artist, Katy Stone. Best known for her large-scale installations and wall sculptures, Stone works primarily in aluminum, Dura-Lar and Plexiglas, creating hybrids of sculpture and painting that combine the visual language of organic forms with synthetic materials.

Force Field will be on view online and in the gallery February 19 - March 26, 2022. An opening reception will be held in the gallery Saturday February 19, 2022 from 3-6pm.

Force Field explores the poetry of color, material and geometric abstraction. Created with an array of ready- made, synthetic materials including ribbon, sequins, transparent polyester film, and laser cut acrylic, the pieces in this exhibition ground the viewer in the here and now with their distinct material presence while at the same time exuding the feeling of other realms, far vistas, and futuristic nostalgia.

Of her work, Stone says:

“These works create psychic and physical space for contemplation. Everything is atmospheric, relating to the sky and vapors, suggesting distant landscapes and energetic bodies: clouds, mists, waterfalls, terrains, celestial forms, rays of light. Look. Feel the pull. The colors are glowing, like sunset and sunrise, the surfaces shimmer. Alluding to phenomena that are unique in the moment yet eternally recurring, my pieces resonate with the sense of time—and faraway places in the past or future.”

In conjunction with the exhibition, an exhibition catalog will be published with an essay written by independent scholar, writer and art advocate, Sharon Arnold.

Katy Stone received her BFA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from Iowa State University, and her MFA in Painting from the University of Washington. Her work is held in the public collections of Boise Art Museum, ID; City of Seattle, WA; Iowa State University, IA; McNay Museum of Art, San Antonio, TX; Missoula Art Museum, MT; Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, MI; Swedish Medical Center, Seattle, WA and the US Art in Embassies of Mumbai and Baghdad. She has been reviewed in many publications including Artweek, New Art Examiner, Sculpture Magazine and Art in America. Her commissioned public artworks include projects for the GSA's Art in Architecture Program, Washington State Arts Commission, The City of Seattle, Cleveland Clinic, Michigan State University, and corporate clients including ConocoPhillips and Microsoft.
